Two Important Aspects of Home Construction: Waterproofing and Cement Rendering

One of the biggest and painstaking tasks in a person's life is building one's home, yet it is also the most rewarding and satisfying job after completion. So many aspects, variations and factors have to be accessed before going ahead with any option. Modern day innovations and the availability of so many options do not help at all; in fact they make it even worse. Which materials to select, what combinations to use, which colours suit my style, design, landscape, etc. are just some of the innumerable questions that make one lose their mind. One thing that everyone should always keep in mind is that if you do not have the knowledge or understanding about any aspect of home building then rather than taking do-it-yourself approach, one should consult an expert like an architect or builder. They have the knowledge and experience to help you make the apt choices when it comes to your dream house. Two very important tasks involved in home making are waterproofing and cement rendering. While the former helps ensure the long life of your home, the latter helps give it the aesthetic appeal.

Waterproofing is the process of protecting your home from water by using a protective coating over different areas of the house like the roof or the basement. The concrete or wood, whichever material is used to build the house is not sufficient to protect your home from water, so waterproofing is required. The conventional method consisted of applying layers of 'membranes', which can be made up of different materials like silicates, PVC, HDPE, etc. But this method had some drawbacks such as short lifespan and if the layers weren't applied properly then it could lead to leakages. Advancement in modern construction technology has led to the development of some amazing waterproofing materials. These materials are usually polymer based and extremely adhesive, when mixed with concrete it creates a mixture which practically has no pores so no water can leak through. Proper waterproofing is very important because if it is not done properly it can lead to numerous problems for your home that can result in a costly affair for you.

Cement rendering is another important aspect of home building. It is the application of a mixture of sand, cement and lime plaster to the exterior of the walls made from brick, stones, cement, etc. Render can be applied to both sides, on the outside of the house as well as on the inside. Using different tools and adding different ingredients like colour pigments and additives one can get a variety of finishes such as fine or coarse, smooth or rough, natural or coloured, etc. Usually the outside of the house is given a rough, coarse render finishing, while the inside is given a fine and smooth one. Additives are also mixed in the render mix to help avoid crack formations, improve strength, increase water resistivity, better adhesion and more flexibility. Different tradesmen have different techniques and use different tools to create special finishing and decorative effects to your cement rendering.

For your newly built home's health and for its appearance, waterproofing and cement rendering are very important aspects respectively. Proper guidance and advice must be taken from an expert professional, while deciding on these two aspects of home building.
