Preserving Oil Paintings

An oil painting on the wall of a drawing room or a living room adds a touch of style, class and elegance! It can also prove to be a good investment. However, proper care along with cleaning has to be taken in order to preserve the much appreciated painting.

One of the key points is the placement of the painting inside the house or office. Hang the masterpiece in such a place where the sun rays don't fall directly. The UV rays of the Sun will lighten the colour at a faster pace. Changes in temperature and humidity in the room may harm the work of art due to expansion and contraction of the canvas. Further, care should be taken to keep it away from dust, smoke or fire place as these are very harmful to the paint.

Apart from the ornamental value, framing a picture protects its sides and the edges from damage of wear and tear. Covering it with a sheet of glass should be avoided as the painting needs to breath. Additionally, you will be able to appreciate its texture and the thickness of paint when seen without a glass covering.

Conversely, not covering the art with glass will attract dust on the surface which can easily be cleaned with the help of a soft, clean brush. Make small, gentle strokes to wipe out the dust. You can also use mild soap water to clean stubborn stains with a soft cloth. However, in case paint is peeled off, don't try re touch yourself. It is best to take the painting to a professional conservator who will do the touching up well.

When shifting the canvas it is advised to wrap it with a bubble wrap and to protect it from bending, place a piece of stiff material like a cardboard or a plywood in front and rear of the painting. Then secure it with a tape. Always handle the painting from the frame.

Make sure to keep the portrait in a dry place away from dust, insects and smoke while storing the picture. Do not spray insecticide around the oil painting as it crack the paint and spoil the beautiful painting. In case you want to keep it away for a longer time then it is best to get a custom made box which lets the air flow from all sides.

Last but not the least, hang your prized possession on two hooks instead on one so that the painting remains horizontal.

Owning oil painting, original or a replicate is indeed a matter of pride. With proper care and handling it will last for generations together.
