I always find it incredibly intriguing to discuss artworks with other people. I think that one of the wonders that's involved here is the fact that we all have such differing reactions to individual pieces. This can mean that we also have strong reactions.
To a certain extent, I find that I'm actually less interested in pieces of art that can be found hanging in art galleries. Although I can certainly see the artistic merit that's attached to many of them (as well as the inflated price tags), it's much more interesting to look at the choices that we may when choosing pieces at home.
The reality is that we really have to like a painting, before choosing to place it within the home. Or is that strictly true? It might be more accurate to say that someone who is close to us must really like a particular painting.
If it's hanging in the home, then we may well have opted to buy it. Alternatively, there's a chance that we received it as a gift, or that our partner may have selected it. This is where the world of art becomes so interesting. What becomes clear is that every single item has a story to tell. We think that the story begins and ends with the artist. The reality, however, is completely different.
It's natural to focus on the artist and it makes sense to do so. They clearly had an extremely significant role to play. Sometimes, you may find yourself wondering if they would have approved of the placing of their piece. Is this what they had imagined would happen to the painting that took them so long to create?
As much as I take such delight in observing the choices of others, it's also fair to say that I find myself thinking deeply about options for my own home. Just like everyone else, I want to be sure that I'm making the right choices. Do I always end up with artworks that I truly love? That's an interesting question and is not as easy to answer as it should be.
I sometimes choose a piece and then find that I tire of it at a later stage. The strange thing is that the piece will not have changed over the years. What has changed is my perception of that painting and the way in which I look upon it. Art is unable to avoid the fact that tastes change with time.
I don't think that this is something that you should be looking to battle. Instead, I think that it makes a lot of sense to concentrate on what will work within your home at this moment in time. It's all that you can really do.
