Face Painting Dangers

Face painting refers to any method in which paint is applied to the face as a way to decorate, accentuate current features, celebrate an occasion, or use the body as a canvas. When people hear the phrase face painting, they are often brought back to childhood memories of fun designs during birthday parties and amusement park visits.

Although it is often a standard at such events, it is used all over the world for many uses. Many will participate in face painting before a sports game to show allegiance to a team. Strangers from various backgrounds are brought together in support of a singular effort, and face it is a way to show support.

It is also commonly used during fashion shows: talented makeup artists are able to highlight a piece of clothing with the use of it. Photographers also face paint their models, as well-the use of different colors, patterns, and shades can evoke various meanings and help bring a photograph to life.

Known as a lighthearted activity, it is a common practice for children and adults alike. This tradition dates back thousands of years, but today it is used for fun to express, celebrate, or mark an event. Although it is often a light-hearted activity, caution should be taken nonetheless. There are face painting dangers that should be noted.

First, the types of paint used absolutely matters. Generally, if used in copious amounts will irritate delicate areas of the face and the effects may last a few weeks. Even the most sensitive of it can still irritate the face. The skin around the face is some of the most delicate skin on the body; if it comes in contact with eyes, the mouth, or the nose, emergency precautions should be taken.

Choose paint that is meant for use on the face. These types of paints are less harmful than craft, acrylic, or wall paint. The chance of a rash or skin irritation is greatly reduced with specialty face paint use.

If paint is accidentally ingested, begin by washing out any remaining part in the mouth. Gargle with salt water immediately. If a child ingests paint, call your family doctor immediately, or head straight to an emergency room if you suspect the paint is toxic. Whatever the situation may be, monitor the person carefully and look for any signs of difficulty breathing or skin rashes.

Face paint also acts as a blocker for sun, to take care if you are walking around outside with a face painting. If a painted face is exposed to the sun for too long, it may result in a rash.

Face painting is an enjoyable experience indeed, but special precautions should be taken to ensure a fun and safe time.

Contemporary Artist Andrea 'Adka' Jones

When you think of New York City, certain memories or images come to mind, such as: the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, Broadway, and Stevie Wonder's song, "Living for the City" from his 1973 album, Innervisions.

Well now you combine all of these thoughts into one name: Adka.

Andrea Jones is "Adka".

By way of a brief biography: Andrea Jones was born in the town of Piestany, Slovakia. "Adka" is her childhood nickname. After a princess-like wedding at the 12th century Bojnice Castle, Slovakia, she moved to the United States in 1999. She currently resides in North Carolina, but one could not possibly move from their homeland, 5,000 miles away to begin a brand new life and not visit New York, New York; that legendary city that welcomes the huddled masses, the tired and the poor, from every part of the known world.

Sure enough, upon taking her first bite of the Big Apple, this delightful and charming Slovakian artist was inspired to restore and revitalize the cacophony of sights and sounds ever present, everywhere throughout New York City and present them again in a brand new light. Adka sees, hears, smells, and feels New York; that concrete urban jungle, that melting pot populated with a multiplicity of people from all over the United States and the rest of the world, that city that never sleeps. New York! Jay-Z and Alicia Keys sing about it! There's Wall Street, Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center and all the other sites and sounds that create NYC's one-of-a-kind magical noise and energy! This is Adka's inspiration. This is what touches her inner being and gives her an inner vision, which she then recreates in the form of modern art and gives back to us. Adka tailored the fanciful folk-art style she learned in her native country and captured the heart, soul and spirit of this internationally acclaimed U.S. city. In her own words: "… I could paint New York City every day and never quite capture all it offers. … New York, New York!"

Adka is represented by Agora Gallery, a fine art gallery located in the heart of New York's Chelsea art district.. Ms. Jones was featured in the May 2011 issue of ARTisSpectrum, an international art magazine; the May 2011 silver issue. Later that same year, in July, a detailed artist profile was published by Suite101.com. Her artwork will be showcased at the Annual International Art Exhibition - November 2011. This event will take place at the Estense Castle of Ferrara in Italy. Though she was at one time, an emerging contemporary artist, she is now respected as an International Contemporary Master. Andrea Jones was approved for the International Contemporary Masters Volume VI, World Wide Art Books and the publication will be out in December 2012.

So do you really love New York?

Then you will definitely fall in love with Adka's Art.

Acrylics as Face paint (from Mr. Steven Patterson, Derivan's CEO)

There have recently been several posts (some old, some new) saying that "acrylics" or artists' paints are dangerous to use on the skin and that they are carcinogenic, that is, they may cause cancer. This is not true, but deserves some explanation. Although some artist acrylics may contain pigments that could possibly be carcinogenic, it is the pigment that is the potentially harmful part, not the acrylic. However, these pigments will usually have more obvious health warnings on them than a cigarette packet, so it will not be hard to work out which are the bad ones. Of course, Derivan's Face & Body Paint, and Tim Gratton's products, contains none of these pigments.

Even with safe pigments, however, regular artist's paint shouldn't be used on the skin, for the same reasons that any other non-cosmetic product should not be used on the skin. Only cosmetic products made to cosmetic standards (or other therapeutic goods that are designed to go on the skin) are made using materials that are proven to be safe on the skin and can be used for pro-longer periods without any side effects.

For Derivan products, if they are labelled non-toxic then that's what they are. Being "non-toxic" however does not mean that they are meant to be eaten or for that matter go on the skin. They are designed to be safe for their intended use and if a person happens to consume a small amount 'accidentally' or get some on their skin 'the average person' will have no reaction. You should keep in mind that there are people who are not 'average' and are hyper-sensitive to some things and they may find that the paints cause them irritation or even to become quite ill, and this can happen with many different things - even something as humble as a peanut can be quite literally life threatening to some people. With that said I can't remember a complaint about our product (and I have been here since 1983). So non-toxic does not equal cosmetic.

Acrylics are not necessarily dangerous (many acrylics are approved and used in cosmetics worldwide) however it is certainly wrong to use an artist acrylic as a face paint. Only paints such as the Derivan Face & Body Paint or Tim Gratton's Aqua Colour that are cosmetics should be used.

Pieces Of Art Can Make Perfect Gifts

I sometimes think that the hardest people to buy gifts for are those individuals who you know particularly well. This seems to completely ignore common sense, which would suggest that such individuals should be easy to purchase for.

The argument here would be that those who we are closest to shouldn't cause us too many problems because we know them so well. We know what sort of gifts they enjoy and which ones we should avoid buying too. So how could things be any more simple?

The answer is, of course, that this close relationship can actually lead to problems. Since you are expected to know and understand them well, a rather generic gift may show a lack of thought. Even if the recipient doesn't suggest that this is the case, it may be a valid concern that you have.

With human nature being as it is, perception is often as important as reality. If you suspect that you will be perceived as being thoughtless, then you'll want to take action to avert such a risk. This almost naturally leads you to consider alternative gifts that display the required sense of individuality.

At this point, let us stop and think about the reality of daily life. Many of us work hard and have a limited amount of free time. As a result, we actually may struggle to get to the shops on a regular basis. We may be left buying many items online, although there may even be difficulties in finding the time to do that.

All of this means that it can be incredibly difficult to find the opportunity to get out and to buy a truly original gift. We may find that we have a lack of inspiration and opportunity. How can we tackle this issue?

I've become rather fond of buying artwork as a gift. If you opt for unique pieces, then you'll know that you're buying something that simply won't be duplicated. This always seems to me to be a rather good idea! But it also allows you to show that you've really thought about the recipient.

If you're not too sure of their tastes, then you can always opt for a beautiful portrait. You might even look to commission one of the entire family. This is clearly a thoughtful gift and one that many people would certainly cherish.

Don't fall into the trap of buying a boring gift. Think a little more creatively.

Consider Commissioning Pieces Of Art

Why have you never thought about commissioning a work of art for your own home? When most people are asked this question, they may think of a number of reasons. I've heard some of these reasons fairly frequently over the years.

People suggest that they don't believe that they have the money to do so. There is certainly a feeling here that great pieces of art are often commissioned and intended for the enjoyment of the rich. Why has this feeling come about? It's hard to ignore the fact that the price tags associated with fine art pieces have continued to increase in recent years.

Whether we're talking about the classical artists of the past, or modern masters, it's clear that the prices that are fetched at auction do put these pieces of art beyond the reach of many, ordinary people. Indeed, when we think about the most amazing private art collections, we may tend to think about them being housed in suitably impressive surroundings.

Given this background, it may not seem terribly realistic for most of us to own wonderful paintings. But the truth is that we're not talking about commissioning a work by Damien Hirst. What we are considering is making use of local artists who have real talent. Many of them may, despite their natural abilities, be struggling to generate an income. They are often prepared to work relatively cheaply.

What does this mean for you and your family? To my way of thinking, it means that a family portrait, something to remember a wedding, or even an oil painting of a cherished pet need not be out of reach. In fact, it's realistic to think that you could own any of these items. It's simply a matter of finding a talented artist who is prepared to carry out the work on your behalf.

Does this all mean that the entire process is likely to be very cheap? There are clearly going to be variations, but it's worth remembering that you are purchasing something that's truly unique. When the final piece is placed in your home, you'll have a painting that will be admired by many visitors. It's likely that they'll also ask how it was produced.

Don't allow yourself be put off commissioning artwork because of fears associated with the costs that are involved. As has been explained, those costs needn't be as great as you might think. It's perfectly reasonable to expect that you can buy some wonderful items at reasonable prices.

You may not, of course, be able to build an extensive private collection. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't aim to brighten up your home and to attract attention by buying some interesting, individual pieces.

You can commission your own family portraits from photos for your own home, as discussed by Simon Barnett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.
